Some major tech players in the industry insist on launching tablets running outdated operating systems. It’s the case of Huawei that just launched a slate running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean today.
However, if you don’t mind holding on to a no-name tablet and you really want Android 4.4 KitKat, there’s an extremely low-cost alternative waiting for you at Staples.
The Nobis 7 arrives with a 7-inch display and draws life from an unnamed 1.2GHz quad-core CPU (hey, it’s quad-core, right?) fitted with 512MB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage.
The catch is that this little tablet sells for just $49 / €37, so it can be considerable a disposable bargain. Of course, it offers a low resolution (1024 x 600 pixels) but it has two cameras (a 2MP one on the back and a VGA one in the front), micro SD card and Wi-Fi.
Battery life is said to last up to 5 or 6 hours, which is not that bad. However, given that the tablet only has 512MB or RAM, expect the slate to stutter and freeze. A minimum of 1GB would be recommended for tablets running Android 4.4 KitKat, so I wouldn't really recommend this unit unless you treat it as disposable object.
