14 DAY TRIAL // The protests against a ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia has ended in several arrests, and it seems that not much has changed since that time.
The situation is better conveyed by a song which has gone viral this week. “No Woman No Drive,” which played on the hacked website of the protesters' movement, ironically mentions some of the reasons for the ban. The piece is a cover of Bob Marley's “No Woman, No Cry.”
According to NY Daily News, it is performed by comedian Hisham Fageeh, who is wearing a ghutra headdress and robe.
He underlines that a reason pointed out by those defending the law is that driving affects women's ovaries. The lyrics suggest that women should just stay at home or in the backseat, where they are safe.
“Say I remember when you used to sit, in the family car, but backseat. Ova-ovaries all safe and well, so you can make lots and lots of babies,” he sings.
