Calpella launch to be adjusted according to partners' inventories

According to a recent news-article on Digitimes, citing 'market sources', Santa Clara, California-based Intel isn't expected to update its mobile CPU pricing until the end of May 2009. The news goes against earlier reports according to which Intel will be reducing the prices of its mobile product lineup, following a drop in the net income for the fourth quarter of 2008. It seems, however, that Intel has decided to keep the prices of its current notebook product lineup as they are, as most notebook vendors still carry large inventories.

The company is said to have decided to keep prices unchanged for its notebook-focused product lineup, especially since any price drop will likely impact those notebook vendors that still have to deal with a rather large inventory. Instead, Intel will be reducing the price of some notebook CPUs in June, giving vendors more time to clear up their inventories. The June price reduction will include the Core 2 Duo T9600 processor, which is expected to benefit from a cost reduction of between 13 and 40%.

In addition, Intel is also expected to further adjust the launch date of its next-generation mobile platform, codenamed Calpella. The delay will also take into account the inventory status of the company's channel partners as well as the market demand for Intel-powered notebook systems. These measures are being taken so that players in the notebook market will be provided with more time to clear up their large inventories.

Regarding the launch of Intel's next-generation platform for notebooks, previous reports indicated that notebook vendors aren't all that happy with the highly anticipated release of Calpella. That is because of the slow market demand for portable computer systems and the increasing popularity of Atom-powered netbooks, which have contributed to the reduction of the overall fully-fledged notebook sales.
