For the moment

The announcement that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was being remade for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 was a nice surprise for some gamers. But then the disappointments kept on coming. For one, the game is not set to arrive on the Nintendo Wii, and Capcom has just said that unveiling the remake in no way meant that a Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was also a possibility.

Seth Killian, who is the community manager at Capcom, told Joystiq, when asked about a sequel, that “The short answer is no, that's not any part of this deal. What we're hoping is that if people get really juiced about this title, and we can show Marvel that there's a lot of heat behind this, then they'll open up the door for us to do something with '3,' which is something we'd love to do.”

Marvel will probably be reluctant to jump into such an agreement, considering the fact that when Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was initially released, the comic book giant was much less concerned about how its characters were used.

Now, the company is making a lot of money by licensing the use of its super heroes in movies, live action TV series, animation and videogames, so it will probably have limited interest in getting a slew of its heroes, like Iron Man and Wolverine, fight against characters taken from various Capcom properties.

The company has no rights to publish Marvel games and licensing issues are also holding up the United States release of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. Killian added that “The rights holders for Tatsunoko in Japan are one company, but in the U.S. it's... 13 companies - and some are very attentive and some are not.”

Capcom is apparently thinking of releasing some fighting sticks branded with Marvel vs. Capcom 2 logos and characters when the game comes out. It's not clear whether they will be coming from Mad Catz, as reported previously, or another company.
