Users that already made the jump to the latest iteration of Internet Explorer will not need to deploy any IE-specific patches this month. According to Microsoft, this month’s Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer does not apply to Internet Explorer 9.

[ARMARK=1] IE9 was released to web less than a month ago, on March 15th, 2011, and is available for download to users running Windows 7 or Windows Vista SP2.

Customers leveraging pre-IE9 releases of IE will however need to deploy MS11-018, which is rated Critical.

Pete Voss, senior response communications manager, Trustworthy Computing, Microsoft explains that MS11-018 is considered a top priority when it comes down to the security bulletins that the company released this month.

A total of 17 patch packages are being served to users worldwide through Windows Update, designed to fix 64 security vulnerabilities.

“MS11-018 (Internet Explorer) - This security bulletin resolves four privately reported vulnerabilities and one publicly disclosed vulnerability in Internet Explorer. This bulletin is rated Critical for IE 6, IE 7 and IE 8 on Windows clients; and Moderate for IE6, IE7, and IE8 on Windows servers,” Voss explained.

“Internet Explorer 9 is not affected by the vulnerabilities. Microsoft is aware of limited attacks leveraging vulnerabilities addressed by this bulletin, including the vulnerability used at the CanSecWest 2011 Conference.”

With IE9 already released, the software giant is already looking to the future, which, at least as far as Ie is concerned is Internet Explorer 10.

The first Platform Preview of IE10 was demoed at MIX11, with downloads already live for early adopters.

While IE10 PP1 cannot yet be used as a fully-fledged browser, IE9 RTW can, and deploying it is a great solution for IE users to dodge this month’s patch releases.
