Software updates will come to it later this year

Enthusiasts reconsidering the purchase of a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 following recent news that the device might enjoy multi-touch after all via software updates should hold their horses. The handset vendor said previously that its first Android-based phone wouldn't do multi-touch, and the company's Communications Manager confirmed this once again. Undoubtedly, software updates will be delivered to the device, but none of them will bring the functionality into the mix, because the phone's hardware does not support it.

“Multi-touch will not be a feature in future updates for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 because the device does not support multi-touch due to her software and hardware configuration. The operation and user experience of the phone will be further improved and Sony Ericsson will come with her own intuitive way of, for example, zooming in and out,” Harold de Kort, communications manager at Sony Ericsson, states, according to a recent article on gsmhelpdesk.

Some of the latest news around the Internet speculated that Xperia X10 will receive not only the Android 2.1 solution during the ongoing year, but multi-touch capabilities too, via a different software update. While new firmware will indeed be released for the device, the said functionality won't be included in the package, it seems. Even so, those who will purchase Sony Ericsson's first Android-based handset will enjoy other improvements, as well as fixes and, most probably, a series of new features.

“Still before the big update in the second half of 2010, Sony Ericsson will distribute some other smaller and bigger updates that will both improve the functionality and the user experience of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10,” Harold de Kort stated. Currently running under the Android 1.6 flavor of Google's OS, the Xperia X10 will be upgraded to Android 2.1 in 2010, while other updates for it might bring virtual keyboard and agenda enhancements, as well as support for HTML5 in its web browser. Sony Ericsson will certainly unveil more details on the matter as the update nears, so stay tuned for additional info on this.
