Although Skype was pretty clear when it announced that Nokia Lumia 610 wouldn’t support its client, the Finnish handset vendor came forward with its own statement claiming that Skype for Windows Phone would be fully supported on Lumia 610.

Made official last month, Nokia Lumia 610 does support Skype for Windows Phone, though the application is not up to par with both companies’ expectations.

This is why Nokia was forced to backtrack on its initial statement and decided to pull the Skype for Windows Phone application from the Marketplace.

The explanation offered by Nokia is in line with Skype’s initial announcement, which stated that Lumia 610 wouldn’t support the Windows Phone client due to low amount of memory.

Nokia values the user experience provided by its products and services. Therefore, although the Skype Windows Phone version is workable on Nokia Lumia 610, after in-depth testing, we found that the user experience is not up to par with Nokia and Skype’s expectation and decided not recommending users using Skype on Nokia Lumia 610."

In the future, users of Nokia Lumia 610 would no longer be able to download Skype Windows Phone version from Window Phone Marketplace. However, Skype Windows Phone version would still be available for other users.”

Nokia Lumia 610 packs only 256MB of RAM, which is why it is powered by a specially tailored Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh operating system.

Moreover, the smartphone is equipped with a single-core processor clocked at 800 MHz. Just like the Lumia 710, this one only embeds 8GB of internal memory.

On the positive side, the Lumia 610 is the cheapest Windows Phone device manufactured by Nokia. The device has yet to make its entrance on several emerging markets, though Nokia estimates the smartphone will go on sale in all targeted regions on Q2 2012.
