Rumor has it that AMD will cease to release their WHQL-tagged display drivers as of this month. It seems like the AMD Catalyst drivers enter a new era, an era based on functionality and more flexible development... and this will bring better gaming, hopefully.
This piece of news comes from a beta tester working with AMD, going by the internet name of LordJuanlo, on the Noticias3D forum. While there is no official statement at the moment of the writing, the forum post claims its author had clearance from AMD to speak about these imminent changes.
From now on, the AMD display drivers will be more focused on the performance improvement and overall quality, rather than on the regularity of the releases. This means that Catalyst 12.5 will be no more; instead of issuing the monthly releases AMD plans to deliver more hotfixes and preview drivers.
This is good news as this move might very well be to the AMD fans and users' benefit as the company's efforts can now be channeled towards more urgent fixes and making the Catalyst drivers work better with new gaming titles.
Rather than being forced to wait for the “due release date” and split their efforts between the WHQL version and the basic development for the upcoming software, AMD looks to have finally understood that the industry is now moving at a really high pace.
