People familiar with Microsoft’s plans say the suite is hitting iOS in 2014

The iOS installment of Microsoft Office is not coming until late 2014, according to a new rumor. People familiar with the project say both iOS and Android will get Office next year.

Sources have informed ZDnet that Microsoft’s roadmap for fall 2014 includes “what’s listed as iOS/Android support for Office.”

The iPad is the iOS platform that makes the most sense for Microsoft’s productivity suite, yet the sources couldn’t specifically say whether the port is for big screens or small screens. According to the report, “it’s not listed on the roadmap as being tablet-specific.”

We’d put our money for an iPad release nonetheless. Even Apple’s iWork clutters the iPhone’s screen with its toolbar, leaving little to no space for an empty sheet.

Since iWork is already available for iPhone and iPod touch, and since Apple may roll out a bigger iPhone this year, Microsoft has very few incentives to pour development resources into scaling its Office suite down to 4 inches on the diagonal.
