The game allows players to do all sorts of things in space and across planets

No Man's Sky developer Hello Games believes that its upcoming space exploration game can attract a lot of people due to its freedom of choice when it comes to the actual role they'll play in the open world, as well as through the fact that there are no traditional gameplay missions.

No Man's Sky is one of the most anticipated all-new experiences set to appear in the near future and independent developer Hello Games hopes to deliver on the promise of a sprawling open world universe in which players can start roaming around planets and solar systems easily and without any sort of arbitrary restrictions.

This freedom of choice, according to Hello Games' Sean Murray, is going to attract plenty of people that are eager to go on an adventure where they dictate the terms, instead of just following the path laid out by the game.

"The short answer is 'you make your own story'. I think it’s nice to play something that frees you from missions and quests," Murray said, when asked about the main reason to play No Man's Sky by PS blog.

"But there’s a longer answer. There are core concepts that will drive the player on: you’ll start on the edge of space, on a totally unique planet and you’ll make your way towards the center of the galaxy – there’s a reason to do that, but we’re not ready to talk about it yet. As you get further in to the galaxy, things will get more dangerous… but also more interesting and rewarding."

The path of progression is a pretty simple one, as players start with a regular ship and they must upgrade it with money they earn by doing all sorts of things in that immediate area.

"You’ll have a basic ship that you’ll need to upgrade if you want to get further than the solar system you’re in. For example, interstellar travel needs a hyperdrive, so you’ll have to earn money to buy one. Or you can upgrade your weapons or your suit so you can explore in different atmospheres or go underwater."

However, earning money isn't done by completing missions or quests like in cliché-filled games nowadays. It's totally up to the player how he or she want to survive in space.

"We’re not going to give you missions. No-one is going to come to you and say ‘I’ve lost five chickens, they’re scattered around this planet somewhere’. We want you to get out and learn about the galaxy to work it out for yourself. There are different roles you could play; you could be an explorer, a trader, a pirate looking for trade routes to plunder – or you could protect other ships from pirates."

No Man's Sky is set to debut in the future for the PC and PS4 platforms worldwide.
