No MMS for iPhone 2G with OS 3.03G and future 3G S handset owners have to wait a little longer for the added messaging service |
|
| |
Although numerous members of the Apple community are aware of this fact, it may be worth noting that first-generation iPhones, also referred to as iPhone 2G (in contrast with the 3G nature of the second-gen iPhone), will lack support for multimedia messaging – MMS. Earlier this year, Apple introduced what was referred to as iPhone OS 3.0 Software. Listing key additions such as Cut/Copy/Paste and MMS, Scot Forstall (joining Phil Schiller for the Macworld keynote address) got the crowd on their feet. However, it was only later that Apple fanboys and iPhone users worldwide learned that MMS would only be supported on the 3G version of the iPhone. Readers of Apple’s press release titled “Apple Previews Developer Beta of iPhone OS 3.0” could see a small asterisk next to the term “MMS.” Further in the article, Apple would reveal the following:
*MMS messaging is available only on iPhone 3G; fees may apply. MMS may not be available in all areas. First-generation iPhone owners are missing out on quite an important addition, this time around. Luckily, the OS 3.0 Software Update is free of charge for owners of any iPhone model. iPod touch users must pay a $9.95 upgrade fee to get OS 3.0. Perhaps also noteworthy is that Apple not only failed to deliver MMS upon the iPhone’s debut two years ago (along with Cut/Copy/Paste, Bluetooth and other features), but now AT&T is lagging behind in delivering the new service to iPhone 3G owners and soon-to-be holders of an iPhone 3G S. Scott Forstall addressing developers and the press at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco got close to getting boo’ed as he revealed that MMS had finally arrived for iPhone, but that it would be locked until AT&T started supporting it later this year. Listing the features soon to be available with iPhone 3G S and the new OS 3.0 software, Apple explains that users will be able to “send messages with text, video, photos, audio, locations, and contact information. You can even forward one or more messages to others.” Then, just below the text, Apple uses smaller writing with a faint grey font to mention that, “MMS support from AT&T [is] coming in late summer.” iPhone 3G S is set to ship with iPhone OS 3.0 pre-installed on June 19. Apple touts the new OS version as “the world’s most advanced mobile operating system,” packing 100+ new additions, including those mentioned above, as well as Spotlight Search, landscape keyboard, video-editing features, a built-in digital compass for instant navigation, as well as built-in Nike + iPod support. Do you have a first-generation handset? How do you feel about missing out on MMS?

| Comment #1 by: James on 17 Jun 2009, 09:10 GMT | reply to this comment | I must admit this it a deal breaker for me. I've been running SwirlyMMS on a jailbroken iPhone 2G for a long time now, and wouldn't be prepared to accept an iPhone OS without MMS. Given that I can use Cycorder for video, SwirlyMMS for MMS, Clippy for copy & paste, and iBluetooth for Bluetooth File Exchange, I'm really not too enthusiastic about upgrading to the latest firmware right now. That said, I'm seriously contemplating upgrading to a 3G or 3GS, should the price come down a bit. |
| Comment #1.1 by: surgeon on 29 Jun 2009, 00:13 GMT | mms for the iphone 2g is HERE! go to cydia, install "activatemms2g" and put in your APN settings. thats it! |
| Comment #2 by: Ant on 17 Jun 2009, 12:57 GMT | reply to this comment | Personally, i think it's crap that Apple would even treat its customers, fans, and iphone early adopters like this. One minute the iPhone is $500, next a better-faster version is released for $199 and so on. Not to mention that customers who purchased the first generation 2G phones received no incentives to upgrade their phones (which should have been free of charge). I guarantee you that soon, AT&T will not support the iPhone 2G and force iPhone 2G owners to upgrade. If you own a 2G, you can already see this happening as your internet is slow, and if you're lucky will work while on EDGE.
Honestly, what is stopping everyone else from going elsewhere, I'm looking at the BB Storm, b/c Apple is just pissing me off. |
| Comment #3 by: J.Johnson on 17 Jun 2009, 19:39 GMT | reply to this comment | My wife has a 2G iphone, this phone SHOULD have had MMS on 2 YEARS AGO WHEN IT WAS RELEASED!!!
Now weve been waiting ages for this in one of the firmwares and 3.0 is finally here... But 2G doesnt get MMS, why??????
Thanks again apple for taking a dump on your loyal customers.
And the supposed excuse of it being a hardware limitation is utter bull, if a crappy nokia 7210 from 2003 can manage the overwhelmingly simple task of sending an MMS over GPRS im sure a 2G iPhone can!!!!! |
| Comment #4 by: AnotherTerribleTry(ATT) on 17 Jun 2009, 20:17 GMT | reply to this comment | I am a 2G user and see absolutely no reason why MMS should not work on my phone. I have been waiting anxiously since I bought the stupid thing for MMS capability and this is another slap in the face from ATT/Apple. I'm fed up with the BS and will not renew my contract...Verizon here I come |
| Comment #5 by: JP on 17 Jun 2009, 20:20 GMT | reply to this comment | I didnt even know about this until I updated this morning! That really %$#$ sucks! |
| Comment #6 by: bobby on 18 Jun 2009, 03:05 GMT | reply to this comment | Well, there is a good reason that MMS was not available for 2g initially. iphone is a non-proxied device (which means it does not require WAP translation to view web content and therefore does not traverse the WAP gateway). Push Proxy is part of the WAP gateway architecture, which is a key component of MMS. To enable MMS requires MAJOR infrastructure changes that have to be VERY carefully calculated and tested to ensure no loss of service. This simply takes a lot of time and resources to complete, so let's not accuse the carrier of dragging their heels just yet.
That being said, the fact that 2g is left out of the mix on MMS is absolutely ridiculous, as is the fact that apple locks many features on the phone. |
| Comment #7 by: Lola on 18 Jun 2009, 14:27 GMT | reply to this comment | I'm thoroughly disappointed. MMS has been such a part of my everyday life, that when I upgraded from a Blackberry Bold, I thought for sure that the functionality of the iPhone would forever bring happiness and giggles, two things my 'iPhone loving' friends said it would bring.
However, with internet connection/surfing being one of the iPhone's strongest points, and having endless apps available, it is really hard to believe that a phone with such features could lack these simple details. I've missed being able to send a quick photo or video to one of my friends. MMS and video was utilized far more than I realized on my Blackberry Bold. What to do? I've been impatiently waiting for this software upgrade, just to be let down with "coming in late summer". I've invested in a phone that is great at sending email, but has left me frustrated in the end.
~I'm still waiting for late summer.... |
| Comment #7.1 by: Dejan on 21 Jun 2009, 11:12 GMT | There is an MMS app for 2G iphones but it requires a iphone that is "jailbroken" and Cydia installer. (swirley mms is the name) but this app is not free. I don't get apple on this one. I love iPhone, Mac's, hell even itunes but this is ridiculous. I'm expected to pay to a third party developer for something every other phone on the marked has. And, just for kicks apple offered an explanation that radio (the GSM signal on the phone) is not good for mms on 2G. Like i'm retarded. I also have some * samsung phone that supperts mms and is not a 3G.
to summerize: people that buy iphones are stupid not to wait for the final version that will finaly give all the features. If we stop buying maybe apple will consider their actions towards their older customers.
Shame on apple for this one. I am an "apple fanboy" and was proud on apple product support so far, but this is just wrong and insulting. |
| Comment #8 by: kb on 19 Jun 2009, 17:34 GMT | reply to this comment | "Apple fanboys?"
Do you have real journalists working there or just "Microsoft fanboys?" |
| Comment #9 by: jase robinson on 20 Jun 2009, 07:38 GMT | reply to this comment | i have a i phone 2g ...phone is great new software update ..great...........but stupid that to send mms i would have to upgrade to 3g or 3gs ......more money........ feel let down after waiting all this time thanks alot .......Apple nice move....NOT |
| Comment #10 by: Pags on 20 Jun 2009, 17:26 GMT | reply to this comment | Typical Crapple, talk bulls**t about some hardware limitations on the 2G not supporting MMS. Strange I have been running it for the last six months using Swirly. |
| Comment #10.1 by: grc on 25 Jun 2009, 20:43 GMT | swirlymms is an alternative, but it is NOT what mms is like on the iphone 3.0 its its on functional app for mms, far from being fully intergrated into the iphones aesthetics or software. it works yes, so does cycorder (the video recorder app, very found of this) but does it work like apple intended it to, no. It had its purpose for a bit but 3.0 is here. NOW for all the mms complainers... i dont get it, your complaining as if (for example) you had to defragment a macbook or something (defragmenting is not an mac problem). youre looking at it all wrong- WHY DOESNT IPHONE HAVE MMS? EVERYTHING ELSE DOES?! is the wrong question. WHY DOESNT EVERY OTHER PHONE HAVE SIMPLE ACCESS TO EMAILS WHERE THEY CAN GET MY IPHONES PICTURES?! from their phone or computer. think, if only everyone you wanted to be in contact with had an iphone WOULD YOU be complaining about anything on the iphone... i think not! |
| Comment #11 by: bee on 21 Jun 2009, 00:19 GMT | reply to this comment | It's quite a disappointment because I have a total messaging plan (basically unlimited SMS & MMS). I realize that Apple needs to profit and it's time for an upgrade, but cell phones just don't fall from the sky for me. Usually iPhone users are quite devoted. It would be nice if Apple gave those who got it first a break and made more of those wonderful features available to first gen users. No such luck ): |
| Comment #12 by: Froze on 21 Jun 2009, 05:51 GMT | reply to this comment | I am still a 2g iPhone user and I have been debating upgrading to 3g but with the hassle of another non-mms phone I may just drop the iPhone. It's great in all it's ways, but not having mms for this long is killer to a phones expected lifetime. I wish they would get it together. |
| Comment #13 by: Lola on 22 Jun 2009, 19:36 GMT | reply to this comment | Considering the circumstances, 'Apple fanboys' wouldn't be able to avoid the obvious issues of the iPhone...Microsoft or Apple shouldn't be the focus here, only the capabilities of the product mentioned. Be fair, Filip Truta is only stating the facts. |
| Comment #14 by: kevin on 23 Jun 2009, 22:08 GMT | reply to this comment | way to screw your 2G owners apple, if swirlymms is capable of delivery mms through the magic of software and only software, i refuse to believe they failed to deliver based on a 'hardware' excuse. |
| Comment #15 by: Iphone 2G User on 25 Jun 2009, 14:24 GMT | reply to this comment | I have had an IPhone 2G since it first came out. I love the apps, the mobility, the flexibility, the tzone hacked unlimited INternet access, emails, EVERYTHING EXCEPT MMS AND VIDEO...i dont understand why apple couldnt add mms and video messaging for 2g's when other 3rd party developers can. AND NO IT'S NOT A HARDWARE ISSUE APPLE. if 3rd party developers can do it, why can't apple?
I see this more less of a way to eliminate the 2g's and pretty much force the 2g owners into purchasing the 3g and 3gS..but what for, the only difference is the camera and processor speed which "promises to be faster"..which i think is another BS. my Internet and speed of my 2g is perfect no need to get another iphone.
Paying for MMS app shouldn't be necessary since we're already paying for the plan every month. even Sprint has MMS!! (i think) but damn i found this out after the fact that i've upgraded to 3.0 so now i gotta go back and crack swirlymms and video recorder again.
IF YOU GUYS FIND WHAT I SAID TO BE TRUE AND TO THE POINT THAT APPLE SUCKS WITH THIS, REPLY BACK WITH A HELL YEA!!!! |
| Comment #16 by: atljosh on 25 Jun 2009, 21:43 GMT | reply to this comment | It appears as if apple is slowly releasing features so that people will continue to want the latest and greatest. I have a 2G and feel like this one is slowly being cancelled out. There are great phones out there that offer everything in one package... bluetooth, gps, mms, tethering to name a few.
My phone is unlocked and jailbroken. I've been on TMobile and have been happy with the service. The phone is great in regards to the variety of available apps. |
| Comment #17 by: Katie on 28 Jun 2009, 12:54 GMT | reply to this comment | HELL YEA!!
I agree, I love the new updates and I was so excited about MMS...only to find out it doesn't work on my phone. Really? I think I'll look into this SwirlyMMS everyone's talking about. |
| Comment #18 by: rocknrolla on 05 Jul 2009, 17:33 GMT | reply to this comment | SwirlyMMS is not available for iPhone OS 3.0. It is currently being updated. Releasedate is unknown.
I think you are completely right. Again first gen iPhone customers are not treated very well by Apple. I am quite sure I will have a look at the Palm Pre. It is cheaper and allows a lot more things than Apple. Anyway as long as the iPhone works I will stick to it.
Anyway some guys managed to activate MMS on the iPhone 2G:
http://www.incomplete-news.com/?p=2404
worked like a charm for me :-) |
| Comment #18.1 by: imfromdownsouth on 08 Jul 2009, 20:31 GMT | Yes, SwirlyMMS IS available for OS3, I have a 2G iphone and it works perfectly... |
| Comment #19 by: nimish on 29 Aug 2009, 18:19 GMT | reply to this comment | hey...i have an iphone 2G and i`m confused whether its feasible to forward messages and record live video with my iphone if i upgrade to OS 3.0...and what all do i miss out with iphone 2G that iphone 3GS provides |
| Comment #20 by: Lesley on 25 Sep 2009, 23:56 GMT | reply to this comment | I have a 2g iPhone, and in the area I live 3g service is not available. You can have a 3g phone but it does you no good. I have not upgraded to the 3g iPhone because my iPhone plan is only $20 a month. AT&T wants to charge me $30 a month for the 3g service plan even though I won't get any additional benefits from it. So now basically I can upgrade and pay a fee, get charged more for my monthly service, still not have 3g service...all to be able to send picture messages. No thanks!! |
