Codemasters explains why the racing game is a last-gen title

Codemasters has discussed the fact that its upcoming Grid Autosport racing game isn't going to appear on the PS4 or Xbox One consoles, attributing it to the fact that it simply doesn't feel next-gen to the studio and that it wants to make sure that its debut on the two new devices is truly impressive.

Grid 2 appeared last year on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 platforms, delivering a pretty great racing experience filled with all sorts of cars, events, tracks, and much more.

However, fans of the series weren't exactly thrilled with some of the decisions that COedmasters had taken, like the removal of the cockpit camera, and other such things.

The studio has heard the feedback and wants to do things right with Grid Autosport, a brand new iteration in the series that focuses more on racing disciplines, while featuring plenty of mechanics to delight longtime fans of the studio's titles.

However, just like Grid 2, it will appear for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. While talking with fans on NeoGAF, Codemasters' Community Manager Ben Walke shed some light on the decision not to bring the game on PS4 and Xbox One.

"The first is that we genuinely want our first next gen outing to be something really great, we don't want to have to rush and only put out a handful of tracks," he said. "We've got 22 locations in Autosport, the bulk of those are real world circuits, would all those have made it if we were to support next gen? Doubtful."

"Secondly, we're working our tech for next-gen now, as such, we're not quite ready. Again, we don't want to rush. Thirdly, after GRID 2 we sort of had something to prove, we wanted to leave the 'old gen' with a bit of a bang so to speak."

Walke did confirm that the studio was going to launch a game, possibly even a Grid title, for the new consoles, but right now, it's focusing on Grid Autosport, which isn't an experience worthy of the new platforms.

"Next-gen GRID will come in time, we're not going to rush that and get a game that can only run at 720/30 or something similar, next gen has to look and feel like 'next gen' for us," he added.

Grid Autosport is set to debut on June 24 in North America and on June 27 in Europe. You can expect to hear more of it in the following weeks.
