14 DAY TRIAL // Valve reveals that it isn't planning on organizing a new Frostivus event in 2014 for the winter holidays in Dota 2, as it wants to focus on the upcoming engine overhaul, although the Chinese-themed New Bloom 2015 event is still set to take place in February.
Dota 2 is one of the most popular multiplayer online battle arena titles out there, bringing together tens of millions of fans from around the world each month, especially when major updates or special events take place in the game.
Unfortunately, while Valve has certainly brought forth quite a few different patches in recent months through which it tweaked the balancing or the map, while adding heroes like Techies or Oracle, the special events have been limited to the Nemesis Assassin one that's available only for those who bought the Phantom Assassin Arcana item set.
No Frostivus this year for Dota 2
Now, seeing as how the winter holidays are rapidly approaching, Dota 2 fans have started speculating over Frostivus, the game's traditional winter-themed event, and what other things will happen during it, as previous editions saw it replaced in a hilarious way by other events like the Greeviling or Wraith Night.
Unfortunately for them, Valve has issued a statement on the official blog saying that there will be no Frostivus 2014 event because it's working really hard on the engine overhaul for Dota 2 that's set to arrive in the first half of 2014.
The work invested in Frostivus wouldn't have paid off
Because this overhaul is coming, working on a custom game mode like Frostivus would be a one-time thing that wouldn't have paid off in terms of the effort invested. As such, Valve has decided to take a similar decision to the one for the Diretide 2014 Halloween event and cancel Frostivus 2014.
"With Diretide this year, we decided that it didn’t make sense to build another one of those resource-intensive game modes, for two reasons. The first was that the mode would quickly become obsolete when the engine changes arrive, and the second was that building it would have taken resources away from the work that needed to be done to ship the engine change itself," Valve explains.
"Now that Frostivus is on the horizon, we find ourselves facing a similar choice and, after some thought, we believe that once again the right choice is to not develop a Frostivus game mode."
However, fans will still be able to enjoy one special event this winter, as the New Bloom Festival 2015 is still set to take place in February of next year, as it doesn't require all that much work from Valve and doesn't impede the efforts done on the engine improvements.
