No Custom Windows 7 Boot Screen

Just in case you were holding your breath for custom boot screen support in Windows 7, it might be a good idea to exhale right about now. Personalization only went so far when it came to Windows 7, Microsoft revealed. Karen Wong, a program manager on the Core User Experience feature team, indicated that end-users would not be able to interfere with the boot sequence of Windows 7 in order to introduce their own content designed to replace the default Windows logo animation. "This is not something we will support in Windows 7," Wong stated.

Windows 7 will only allow personalization on the end-users' part once the boot process is completed. As was the case with previous releases of Windows, users will be able to change the desktop background, system sounds, colors, and opt for a variable GUI experience with the Aero color schemes. In this regard, Microsoft is already offering themes and wallpapers for the Windows 7 Beta Builds 7000, and promises to continue doing so in the future. But no custom boot animations are taken into account.

"The reasons for this should be pretty clear, which is that we cannot guarantee the security of the system to allow for arbitrary elements to be loaded into memory at boot time. In the early stages of starting Windows, the system needs to be locked down and execute along a very carefully monitored and known state, as tools such as firewalls and anti-virus checking are not yet available to secure the system. And, of course, even though we’re sure everyone would follow the requirements around image size, content, etc. due to performance, we would not want to build in all the code necessary to guarantee that all third parties would be doing so," Wong added.

As far as the Windows 7 boot process goes, Microsoft wants it to be left untouched. Fact is that malicious code exploiting a customizable boot process is not a scenario the Redmond company is willing to risk. "One of our design goals of Windows 7 was around making sure there are ample opportunities to express yourself and to make sure your PC is really your PC, and so we hope that you’ll understand why this element is one we need to maintain consistently," Wong concluded by saying.

Can't change the boot sequence screen at start-up? Is that not a challenge M$ is sending to the world? No doubt a cracked version will appear soon as someone will rise to the challenge!

Oh well no native support for customizing the windows boot screen and it seems the log on screen as well, so what, wait a couple of months after full release of windows 7 and a 3rd party program will be released that will allow you to change them anyway, it was the same for both XP and Vista, where there's a will there's a way and there always is a way with computers.

?....YEAH, sure we can't change it...i want to see them say that in a year from now when someone gets around it.

They don't want people customizing the boot process because they don't want people using animations with background colors other than black.

Edgardo they never said it cant be changed they said they'd pefer it to be left alone as changing the boot screen can cause the system to be very unstable sometimes so they'd rather save themselves the money from people suing them because there system suddenly became unstable (as an american is prone to do)

Thats not why they dont want customisation of the boot screen at all.

Though I would dearly love to change the boot screen I have to agree with Karen Wong. Microsoft already gets enough bad press for security issues imagine the outcry if it was found that something really bad could be executed during the "customisable" bit of booting. Good decision MS. Now if only you'd reduce your prices .....

They're not exactly that bad. I mean, have you ever seen an Apple price-tag? :P

Just because they will not "support" it, doesn't mean it is imposible to find a way to do it. I have friends who changed the bootcreen.

For anyone looking for a solution :

- First, Use ResHack with %windir%\system32\bootres.dll file
- Extract the RCData resource.
- So you have two files, one *.rc and another one *.bin
- Rename the file *.bin into *.wim (not win!!)
- Use 7zip to extract your *.wim file
- In the extracted files you have an xml witch describe the second file witch is the boot logon bitmap animation!!!

Now you can modify the logon animation! But be carefull, to have a correct xml description file!!!

After modifications, do the inverse procedure, with a backup of your original bootres.dll file.

I advise you to try on a virtual machine before!

PS : Microsoft do not recommend to change it!!!

the problem is that the dll is SIGNED!

your screen resolutin has to be at least x-1024 and y-768
if it is 1024 by 60 or 1024 by 576 (hp mini/asus eee/samsun g mini/acer aspire/ec an netbooks) it will not work./ the animation is 1024 by 768. if it is not that res in w or h it will not work...

Maybe Microsoft should make an official boot screen customiser? So that people don't try to do it themselves and f**k up their computers or leave gaping big holes for hackers to get through.

if it is our pc then we should be able to manipulate it as WE see fit. regardless
