Third-party photographic accessories are starting to get better and better, and many photographers on a budget choose to purchase cheaper gear that packs similar performance as the more expensive branded products.

Nissin, one of the most popular third-party lighting equipment manufacturers, announced recently the new Nissin i40 compact flashgun for Nikon, Canon, Sony, and Micro Four Thirds camera systems.

Nissin i40 comes with a very compact body design (85x61x85mm) that is almost half the size of the firm's high-end flashguns, which makes it suitable for mirrorless cameras as well as small DSLRs.

Although small in size, Nissin hasn't hold back on its features. The i40 replaces the electronic display found in pricier models with two intuitive control dials that allow you to select the operating mode and quickly adjust exposure compensation and power level in Manual mode.

On a closer look at the back of Nissin i40, we can see that the flashgun comes packed with a continuous video shooting mode, two slave modes, Manual control, Auto TTL, and advanced wireless slave.

The second dial allows you to change the speedlight's power in manual mode using 1 stop increments up to 1/256, while if in TTL mode, the dial can be used to change exposure compensation in half-stop increments from +2.0 to -2.0.

Apart from that, the i40 also comes with a LED video lamp and a guide number of 40 at 105mm that gets down to 27 when setting the flash at 35mm. Despite being so compact, the flash also offers a full range of bounce options thanks to the swiveling flash head (180° left/right and 90° up/down tilt).

Among other features we can also mention 4-second recycle time, 24-105mm zoom, 9 stops dimming LED light that can last up to 3.5 hours, AA battery support. The Nissin i40 is expected to hit market shelves in June, but pricing is yet to be announced. If you'll be present at next week's CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan, you can check out a prototype of the newly developed flashgun.
