2014 is not even over yet, but Nissan LEAF has already set a new record for the most EVs sold in the US

Earlier this week, multinational automobile manufacturer Nissan announced to the world that its LEAF had established a new record for the most electric vehicles sold in the US throughout the course of a single calendar year.

Add to this the fact that 2014 is not even over yet, and it's safe to say that the Nissan LEAF isn't just a well-liked car in the US, it's pretty much the king and queen of eco-friendly road trips.

Little room left for competition

In a statement, car manufacturer Nissan details that, since the beginning of the year until the end of September, folks in the US bought 36% more LEAFs than they did in the same period back in 2013.

This means that the Nissan LEAFs has already surpassed the record for the most US electric vehicle sales documented in the US last year. Interestingly enough, this previous record was also established by the Nissan LEAF.

According to the car maker, as many as 22,610 such environmentally friendly cars found loving homes in the US in 2013. Besides, it appears that, since the Nissan LEAF was launched, the company has sold over 64,000 such cars in this country.

Mind you, the Nissan LEAF is quite popular on a global scale as well. Thus, it is estimated that, all in all, the car maker has until now sold more than 142,000 LEAFs to people living all around the world. Heck, even a Buddhist priest has one.

“With nearly 20 electric cars or plug-in hybrid models on the road today, Nissan LEAF remains at the head of the class, outselling the nearest competitor by 50 percent through September,” Sales and Infrastructure Director Brendan Jones commented on the LEAF's setting a new sales record.

“Since the initial launch in 2010 our primary goal is to bring electric vehicles to the mass market in a practical and fun-to-drive package, and we continue to deliver electric cars to more new buyers than anyone else,” he added.

Not the end of the road

The multinational car manufacturer expects that, in the months to come, even more people will dig deep in their pockets and step up to buy a Nissan LEAF, and not just because the thought of their tremendous ecological footprint is keeping them up at night.

Thus, the company promises that the Nissan LEAF is a perfect family car, and that, contrary to what some might assume, it's well equipped to handle all sorts of traffic conditions. Interestingly enough, it's the people who already own a LEAF that the company expects will convince others to buy one as well.

As explained by Sales and Infrastructure Director Brendan Jones, “Nissan LEAF owners are eager to share their enthusiasm with neighbors, friends and family, and that passion makes them some of our best salespeople.”

“We've seen a ‘cul-de-sac’ effect where the first LEAF owner in the neighborhood becomes the community champion for electric cars, educating neighbors on the benefits of going electric, even sometimes handing the keys over for a test drive.”
