Nintendo might be experimenting with a slate packed with educational games

More and more companies that you wouldn't normally associate with tablets appear willing to jump on board of the slate bandwagon.

We’ve already seen retail giants like Tesco and Argos release their own branded devices and not so long ago we brought you news that chip manufacturer AMD was also working on its own tablet endeavor dubbed “Project Discovery.”

The latest to join the party seems to be Nintendo which, according to a series of Tweets by Nintendo of America software engineer Nando Monterazo, is experimenting with a tablet, VentureBeat reports.

He reveals that at the moment he is in possession of the device and is “just testing the communication environment of educational games that will be shared between the kids using the tablet.”

When asked by a Twitter user what kind of tablet users should expect, Monterazo explained that the Nintendo slate would be an educational device pre-installed with games featuring Nintendo characters. NES, Super Nintendo or Game Boy will not be making an appearance on the tablet, as its focus revolves around educational purposes.

Worthy of mention is that the slate will apparently run Android out of the box, which is good news for old timers hoping to play some old-school Nintendo games on the slate. Monterazo claimed that such games won’t be compatible with the slate, but since Android is well known for its emulation capabilities, playing older games will probably be an option too.

It would be pretty amazing to see a Nintendo slate become reality, especially since the company has been skittish about entering the mobile ecosystem. But the rise of mobile devices in consumer preferences is something that can’t be ignored, so Nintendo might be looking to adapt to the current trend.

The gaming giant has been asked to comment on the rumors, but has declined to do so. Also at this moment, the original Tweets seem to have disappeared from Monterazo’s account.
