The Marvel Universe-based sequel to Disney Infinity, dubbed 2.0, is on its way, scheduled to drop on every console except the old Nintendo Wii, and Disney is now letting users download the original game free of charge for the Wii U.

The Wii has been replaced by its beefier successor, the Wii U, and Disney has decided to allow users free access to the Wii U version of Disney Infinity on the eShop, also making sure that the base and game figures are compatible with either system.

The game now being available for free does not however mean that you'll be able to play it without owning the physical base and at least one Infinity figure, so you'll have to grab a starter kit at the minimum in order to be able to enjoy it.

Furthermore, the upcoming Disney Infinity 2.0 figures will be backwards compatible with the first game's base and figures, in order to make sure that fans of the franchise who built a big collection of miniatures are not left dead in the water and will be able to enjoy the game with their preferred motley crew.

"Disney Infinity launched one year ago, and in that time the number of Wii U players has significantly expanded. Given our commitment to compatibility for our players, we wanted existing Wii owners to be able to experience the Wii U version of the first game for free."

"With the upcoming launch of the 2.0 Edition of Disney Infinity we want all Nintendo players to experience the game's Wii U functionality," developer Avalanche Software's Vice President and General Manager John Blackburn stated.

The original Disney Infinity launched on both the Wii and the Wii U, and the free version of the title will encompass all the console-specific content, including GamePad integration for the Toy Box's online mode.

Additionally, the developer has mentioned that the PlayStation 4 version of Disney Infinity 2.0 will be compatible with the PlayStation 3 game's base, but Xbox One owners will have to acquire a new base, as the Xbox 360 one will not work with the 2.0 version of the game.

The upcoming sequel will include original story material, with multiple plots and characters from both Marvel and Disney properties, including The Avengers, Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes, aka Disney Infinity 2.0 Edition, is scheduled to come out on September 18 in Europe and Australasia, and September 32 in North America, to current- and last-generation consoles, PC and iOS.
