Owners of both consoles won’t have to create separate accounts in order to download things

Nintendo has apparently confirmed that the Wii U’s online store and the 3DS’ eShop would have unified accounts, meaning owners of both consoles are going to be able to buy items digitally without having to create multiple accounts.

Nintendo’s online efforts haven’t been that impressive, as both the Wii and the various DS versions had clunky services.

Things were improved with the launch of the 3DS last year, which made all of its content available via an online eShop.

For the upcoming Wii U home console, Nintendo is taking the same approach, confirming that the device will have an online store and that, in the near future, accounts from the Wii U will be able to access the eShop on the 3DS.

"A unified account system will be implemented later this year with the launch of the Wii U. Eventually this same account system will be made compatible with Nintendo 3DS systems," said Nintendo Customer Service Representative David Marshall, via NWR.

No other details are available just yet but you’ll no doubt hear about the system as we get closer to the release of the Wii U.

"At this time we have no additional details to offer and nothing to indicate how or if this will work outside the United States and Canada," he added.

Marshall then touched upon the first full game download for the 3DS eShop – New Super Mario Bros. 2 – which won’t be released in territories like Latin America, apparently.

"The digital format will only be available in the United States and Canada. We have nothing to announce regarding Latin American availability," he said.

You can expect some more official details about the Wii U and New Super Mario Bros. 2 on the 3DS soon enough. Until then, fans will have to wait and see just where the game will be available as a digital download.
