A team of hackers have apparently cracked the firmware of the Wii U's GamePad controller and found that the home console can actually support two gamepads at the same time, despite Nintendo's reluctance to talk about such a capability.

Nintendo launched the Wii U last year and bundled it with a special GamePad controller that had regular physical buttons but also a special touchscreen.

While there were rumors that Nintendo could release another GamePad controller that Wii U owners could buy, the company said that enabling such a thing wasn't a priority.

According to a team of hackers, however, the firmware of the console and of the GamePad can allow for such a thing.

The team talked with Eurogamer and said that the firmware of the controller is upgradeable, so Nintendo could easily unlock new functions and even allow for more GamePads to be connected to the same console.

As of yet, Nintendo hasn't commented on the reported hack.
