Video game hardware maker Nintendo is clarifying that it has no plans to stop production of the Wii home console for the United States and the European markets, with the recent announcement only applying to Japan.

A representative tells Gamespot that, “The announcement that the Wii console has been discontinued is specific to Japan. There is no change in the status of Wii in the United States, and it is available for purchase this holiday season.”

The Wii was first launched eight years ago and initially sold very well, mainly because it offered unique motion-tracking-powered gameplay and games like Wii Sports.

The Wii U successor has not been as successful as Nintendo was expecting.

The Wii is still selling at a profit and that means the company continues to deliver content for it in order to have another solid revenue stream.
