Phil Tossell, a former Rare developer co-founder of Nyamyam, says that Nintendo was envious of the work that his company was doing because it saw their games as being superior to the ones created at studios owned by the publisher.

He is quoted by NintendoEverything as saying that, “Miyamoto would visit regularly and I heard a rumor they redid all of the textures on Zelda after they’d seen our work on Banjo-Kazooie because our game looked better!”

Rare was one of the most important developers for Nintendo in the ‘90s and has created enduring classic games such as GoldenEye 007 and Donkey Kong.

The company was acquired by Microsoft in 2005 and its co-founder left soon after to pursue other opportunities.

At the moment, the studio is working on Kinect Sports Rivals for the Xbox One, set to appear in the spring of 2014.
