The game might change up the core series mechanics

Video game publisher and hardware developer Nintendo has unveiled a new Super Mario Bros. video game that, to the surprise of many of the fans of the series, is being developed in conjunction with a team from Namco Bandai.

Presumably, the Japanese company has been chosen because of its long-term experience with the fighting game genre, which will allow Nintendo to update the core mechanics of the long-running series and make it more attractive to modern gamers.

Namco Bandai is currently also putting the finishing touches on the Dead or Alive 5 game, which will be launched later during 2012, and the company is also known for the Tekken series of game, which debuted in arcades and have since then moved to home consoles.

The core mechanics of the Super Smash Bros. universe is that players do not defeat an opponent by simply taking chunks out of their health bar but by pushing them out of the battle space.

It’s not clear whether the new game will keep the same concept or whether it will change it in its quest for modernity.

Neither Nintendo nor Namco Bandai has revealed any sort of actual gameplay footage linked to the new Super Smash Bros.

During the Nintendo Direct event, the company has also shown a number of new other titles: Project Zero II for the Wii, a new the Kirby 20th anniversary collection and also talked about Dragon Quest X.

For the 3DS the company revealed a new role-playing game called Culdcept, Pocket Soccer League Web, Soul Hackers, another RPG from Atlus, Lost Heroes, Samurai Warriors Chronicles 2, an idol gamer called AKB48, Ex Trooper, Project X Zone, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy and a new Onitore video game under the Dr. Kawashima label.

More information about the game will probably be offered on an individual basis in the coming weeks and months.
