Nintendo says that it might launch some special consoles aimed at emerging markets in the coming year, in order to make sure that it targets the wide range of gamers who might not be able to buy a 3DS or a Wii U.

Satoru Iwata, the president of the company, is quoted by The Verge as saying that, “We want to make new things, with new thinking rather than a cheaper version of what we currently have. The product and price balance must be made from scratch.”

Nintendo has traditionally created unified hardware for all the markets on which it is present and the change in strategy is probably designed to create more revenue streams that can balance the problems that the Wii U home console is currently having.

The company has not offered any other details and it is not clear when it might make announcements about its special hardware for emerging markets.

One country that Nintendo might target is China, which has recently announced that it is opening its console market, something that both Sony and Microsoft are ready to take advantage of.

This year, the launch of Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8 are set to boost sales numbers for the Wii U.
