Nintendo is celebrating the one-year anniversary of the launch of the Nintendo 3DS handheld in the West by announcing that the device has managed to sell more than 4.2 million units all over the world, also powering the release of important video games like Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.

Reggie Fils-Aime, who is the leader of Nintendo of America, stated, “Nintendo 3DS closes its first year with a lengthy list of accomplishments but we're still just scratching the surface.”

He added, “With a massive lineup of first- and third-party games and more on the way, a budding library of entertainment options and an engaged and growing installed base, Nintendo 3DS has an incredibly bright future. We're just getting started but this platform is built for the long haul.”

The Nintendo 3DS had a tough few months, but after the company implemented a price cut for it, sales took off and the device is now regularly on the Japanese chart and it does well in the West as well.
