The development team at Nintendo working on the upcoming New Super Mario Bros. U reveals a number of new modes and features that are designed to enrich the new title in the series and improve on its traditional gameplay.

Challenge Mode will see players try and complete a number of very specific objectives, ranging from clearing an entire course without getting one coin or without touching the ground level.

There are four categories for the new mode: Time Attack, Coin Collection, 1-Up Rally and Special.

Each time a player manages to complete one of them, New Super Mario Bros. U automatically saves a replay so that players can then brag about their achievement.

The Coin Battle mode will include up to four players and will see them move through a course while competing in order to get the most coins.

The mode will use the new GamePad controller to create new layouts for the coins on the various courses while the Wiimotes will be used to actually play the game mode.

New Super Mario Bros. U will also include a new World Map feature that is filled with secret exits and shortcuts that the player needs to discover and will allow gamers to play the game in non-linear fashion.

This is the first time that the feature has been seen in a Mario game since Super Mario World back in 1992.

Nabbit is the latest addition to New Super Mario Bros. U, a creature that appears at random and steals items from Toad.

Players will have to chase the Nabbit and they can get access to a P-Acorn, which allows Mario to fly continuously through an entire stage.

New Super Mario Bros. U is a launch title for the Wii U home console from Microsoft, which means that it will be offered in North America on November 18, on November 30 in Europe and December 8 in Japan.
