Masahiro Sakurai, the leading developer working on Super Smash Bros., says that Miis will be a revolutionary new addition to the upcoming brawler for the Wii U because they make the player more involved in the action.

In an article written for the Japanese magazine Famitsu and which was translated by Kotaku, the game creator says that he initially evaluated the idea of adding player avatars to the series back in 2008, when he was working on Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

At that time, the team believed that they were not popular or interesting enough to be included in the series and that they could only serve as a distraction from the core mechanics.

Now Sakurai says that almost all those who are using the Wii U are engaging with their Mii and that means that they will also be interested in using them in Super Smash Bros.

The developer states, “It’s a feature we’ve put quite a lot of effort into. I think it’s a revolutionary thing to be able to fight with Mario or Link or Kirby with your own character.”

He adds, “Depending on who you are, this new Smash Bros. may hold quite a different meaning compared with previous iterations of Smash Bros.”

In Super Smash Bros., the team says that Miis can use one of the three typologies and there are more than 40 combinations of powers that they can get access to.

Because of concerns over copyright issues, Nintendo says that they will only be available for use in local matches and in online multiplayer when the friends of the player are involved.

Eight core characters from the series will be unlocked when the player first picks up Super Smash Bros. and he can then unlock a range of others, each with their own style and set of moves.

Nintendo also says that the addition of Miis means that the community will no longer be able to ask the company to add more characters after launch because they have the option to create their favorites on their own.

Super Smash Bros. on the 3DS is set to arrive in October and the much more important Wii U version will be delivered during the holiday period.

Nintendo says that the game is very important for its long-term plan to revive sales of its home console, which also includes the launch of The Legend of Zelda and the introduction of the Amiibo figurines.
