The company might have to buy the domain at auction

Video game hardware maker Nintendo has failed to secure the WiiU.com website after the World Intellectual Property Organization decided that the current owner of the domain had the right to hold on to it for the time being.

The non-governmental body has not offered a reason for its ruling at the moment and it seems that Nintendo might have to buy the domain in order to use it as the core online presence for its new Wii U home console.

At the moment, the site is up for auction and displays adds for some Nintendo products, according to Fusible.

Both Sony and Microsoft are at present engaged in efforts to get access to domain names that are linked to their next-generation devices, the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.

The Wii U decision might mean that the companies will have to pay to get ownership in the coming months.
