Gamers are encouraged to make the move to the new Wii U

Nintendo is today closing down a number of online services that were available on its older Wii home console, and apologizes to gamers who are still using them.

The services that will no longer be available are, according to CVG:

Nintendo Channel News Channel Forecast Channel Everybody Votes Channel Mii Contest Channel Data exchange with Wii Friends

The last one means that gamers will no longer be able to engage in "exchange of Wii messages on the Wii Message Board, exchange of Mii characters on the Mii Channel and message/data exchange within some games."

It's unclear whether Nintendo has long term plans to slowly shut down its support for the older home console in order to persuade its fans to make the move to the Wii U.

The new device has failed to generate the amount of sales that the company was waiting for.
