The DS is a hugely successful gaming console, largely due to the fact that it has a lot of video games made for it and because of the great support that it has been enjoying from Nintendo.

As its latest iteration, the DSi, is breaking records left and right, and is extremely popular, even though the user base for the old DS and DS Lite was large before its launch, Nintendo of America’s president, Reggie Fils-Aime, recently talked about its DSiWare service.

For those of your who don't know, the DSi, with its built-in Internet browser, features a service similar to the WiiWare one for the Wii console, and people can connect to the DSi Shop and buy new applications for their devices. Fils-Aime revealed that he was “ very pleased with the DSi connection rate to the DSi shop.”

He also elaborated on how the DSiWare should grow as big as the WiiWare service in the future, “Our expectation is that it will quickly grow to be robust just like WiiWare. WiiWare today has almost 90 titles. Including greatly acclaimed titles like World of Goo and Lost Winds. We think our model of highly-polished, immersive, innovative experiences is the right model to have.”

The Nintendo executive also touched on a much debated subject and one that has been generating a huge amount of rumors and speculations, that of the DSi getting a Virtual Console service, which will allow it to play titles originally made for older Nintendo portables. Sadly, it wasn't the confirmation fans have been waiting for, “I know there has been a lot of speculation, but we have no plans for that.”

The DSi is selling extremely well, so Nintendo won't reveal any new features until the market calls for it. So, until then, DSi owners will have to settle with the DSiWare service.
