Reggie Fils-Aime, who is the president of Nintendo of America, has confirmed during a television appearance that the new Wii U home console from the company will not be launched before the month of April 2012.

The executive has made an appearance on the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show, which airs on NBC, and talked about the Wii U while also demonstrating the abilities of the new hardware.

During the discussion about the console Reggie Fils-Aime made it clear that Nintendo has no plans to launch the Wii U before the end of April 2012, as it is still working hard to finalize the hardware details and to launch production of the device.

Recently Nintendo also confirmed that it will be sending out test Wii U consoles with updated hardware in late June or early July of the year to publishers and developers in order for them to have up to date platforms on which to test their development tools.

The Wii U was initially shown at the Nintendo press conference at E3 2011 and the highlight has been the new controller, which includes a sizeable touch screen as well as analog controls and motion tracking hardware.

The new controller will be integrated in gaming experiences and will allow players to go on even when someone is using the television set for something else.

Despite this fact the controller is not actually autonomous and needs to be close to the Nintendo console to work.

A listing coming from an online retailer has suggested that the launch date for the Wii U is set for the middle of June of next year.

Another unknown is the price of the device, with analysts suggesting that the touch screen controller might push it up past the 300 dollars mark.

Nintendo has not commented but it is aiming to make the new device similarly priced to the original Wii.
