Nintendo wants to make the eShop an enjoyable application

Nintendo has confirmed quite a lot of improvements that are coming for its 3DS handheld console, many that specifically target its online eShop, including support for game demos, downloadable content, as well as a future compatibility with an online webportal that can be accessed from a computer.

Nintendo's 3DS hasn't exactly been the success the company had hoped for, but with a recent price cut and lots of aggressive offers, things are changing.

In order to make using the 3DS much easier, Nintendo is planning a new update for the software of the device, which also includes new features for its eShop that have now been detailed by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, via Industry Gamers.

“Several new functions will be added to the Nintendo eShop,” Iwata said. “In terms of its usability, we know that there still are several issues with the Nintendo eShop. We have made several improvements for this time.”

“For one thing, after a software title is launched, content can be added to it via the Nintendo eShop. This is a feature a number of software creators have been looking forward to,” he continued. “Software downloads can be done when Nintendo 3DS is in sleep mode, which will lessen the need for the users to patiently wait by while downloading several software titles at once or while downloading software with a large memory capacity.”

Besides the possibility of getting DLC via the eShop and having it download in Sleep mode, the company will also allow users to access the online store via their PCs or smartphones. Unfortunately, this oft-requested feature won't be available anytime soon, so Nintendo offers a rather peculiar workaround.

"You will need to take a photo of a QR code at the Nintendo eShop by using the camera of your Nintendo 3DS," Iwata explained. "The Nintendo 3DS will then open that specific page of the Nintendo eShop. That function is already included in the upcoming system update for the Nintendo 3DS. In the future, we will make it so that you will be able to purchase software by using your PC or smartphone.”

This new software update for the Nintendo 3DS hasn't been dated, but it's expected to hit sometime in the next couple of months.
