During a Game Developers Conference hardware manufacturer and video game developer Nintendo has announced that it’s just launched 3DS handheld will get access to movies, television shows and trailers from Netflix and will also get special made 3D video segments.

All those who own a 3DS and also have a subscription to Netflix will be able to stream movies and television content from the service starting at some point this summer, with the performance expected to be similar to the Wii version of Netflix.

Reggie Fils-Aime, who is the president of Nintendo of America, has said, “We're offering studios a distribution vehicle to a large and motivated userbase to promote their upcoming releases in 3D without glasses. And those owners will want to share those experiences with others.”

One of the first 3D video segments to be released on the Nintendo 3DS will be a trailer for the upcoming Green Lantern super hero movie, designed to show off the glasses-free three-dimensional abilities of the new handheld but also to promote the way the movie uses the new technology.

More 3D-powered video content will arrive at a later date and will include music videos, movie trailers and comedy sketches, all of them approved by Nintendo.

Fils-Aime has also said that in the near future the 3DS will get an update that will allow the twin cameras to create three-dimensional movies, although no date was mentioned.

Nintendo has also announced that it has entered into a partnership with communications giant AT&T, with the aim of creating more than 10,000 Wi-Fi hotspots all over the United States.

The Nintendo 3DS will use the new hotspots automatically and will allow the device to quickly download demos and video content while gamers can join multiplayer games.

The 3DS is now out in Japan and will be launched in North America and in Europe before the end of March.
