Sales of the 3Ds handheld from Nintendo have now surpassed those of one of its predecessor, the Game Boy Advance, which suggests that the platform will create some solid records in the coming years.

During 154 weeks on sale, the modern handheld has surpassed a total of more than 15 million units delivered to players, while the GBA only posted sales of 11.64 devices during the same period.

The 3DS is still lagging behind the normal DS, which managed to move 20 million units after 154 weeks on the market, according to Siliconera.

When the 3DS was launched, it failed to make a solid impact in the marketplace and Nintendo was forced to slash its price and launch a solid line-up of titles before the device became attractive for players.

The lower sales might be a result of the tough competition that smartphones are creating, but the 3DS is still able to sell more units than the rival PlayStation Vita from Sony.
