The upcoming launch of the Nintendo 3DS portable games console will be a landmark moment that will spur a huge array of changes in the industry, at least according to the Japanese company itself.

Nintendo is getting ready to debut its brand new handheld, the 3DS, which will be a serious game-changer, at least in the eyes of its UK marketing manager Dawn Paine, who talked with specialty magazine MCV.

"We're really relishing one of those big landmark moments," Paine said. "As you can imagine, we are deep in the planning and it is going to be another once-in-a-cycle launch.

"The difference is that there are other brands operating in that space - and we're really excited about the positioning of the product and what it can achieve," Paine continued.

The Nintendo 3DS, as its name suggests, will be the first mass-market 3D-enabled device out there, and is set to bring the technology into the hands of a huge amount of people.

"It's the world's first mass-market, portable, 3D device, without glasses. Buried within that one sentence are some huge factors that will bring about big changes," Paine continued. "It's a great opportunity to explode 3D onto the wider marketplace."

Nintendo isn't the only company confident in the 3DS, as local rival Sony is also happy that the new device will be launched, because it will showcase 3D technology to more people, and, hopefully, make them commit to purchasing a 3DTV and a 3D-enabled home console like the PlayStation 3.

The Nintendo 3DS is set to sell a lot of units, despite the possibly high price, largely due to its new technology and because Nintendo and a lot of other developers, including Capcom, Konami or EA, will be bringing their top franchises onto the handheld console.

As of right now, the Nintendo 3DS will be launched in February in its native Japan, and in March for the rest of the world.
