The Wii U might not be performing as well as Nintendo is expecting, but it seems that the company can count on its handheld division in the long term, after announcing that the 2DS device has managed to sell 2.1 million units since it was launched, on October 31.

The 2DS is meant to simplify the design of the device and make it easier to use, while dropping the 3D capabilities.

Many analysts believe that the 2DS would not appeal to players because it offers no new features, but it seems that there are at least 2 million players who were willing to pay for the device and for titles associated with it, according to Joystiq.

Nintendo also says that Animal Crossing: New Leaf has managed to move 7.38 million units worldwide since it launched, on November 12.

The game was offered exclusively in Japan for a while and only arrived on Western markets in June of last year.
