Nikon has been said to be working on its first DSLR product ever to feature a touchscreen display, and as was expected, the D5500 went live today, launched as a competitor for Canon’s oldie but goldie, 700D.

But the specifications inside the shooters are quite different. For starters, the sensor inside the Nikon D5500 is a 24.2MP DX-format.

Nikon's latest D5500 DSLR is entry-level

Compared to the two-year-old 700D, the new Nikon is a tad smaller and lighter, coming in at 124 x 97 x 70 mm / 4.8 x 3.8 x 2.7 inches with a 420g / 0.9 lbs weight.

The D5500’s screen is of the 3.2-inch variety and can be arranged in multiple positions, depending on the particular shooting scenario you find yourself in.

The camera is built around the EXPEED 4 image processing engine onboard that allows the camera to shoot at 5fps.

D5500 takes advantage of a 39-point autofocus system with nine cross-type sensors in the center. ISO range is situated between 100-25,600 and the device also takes advantage of built-in Wi-Fi to share photos with a smartphone or a tablet.

As for video, the D5500 can shoot at 1080p in 60fps. It also bundles a built-in microphone. However, those who aim to use the camera at its professional capacity should know that the shooter is compatible with Nikon’s own ME-1 stereo mic.

The DSLR comes bundled with certain editing modes

Nikon also throws in 10 special effect modes which users can easily browse through via the touchscreen controls and 16 scene modes.

Nikon says the entry-level DSLR can be used to shoot up to 820 shots on a single charge with 60% flash usage or 3200 without any at all.

Looking at the camera you might get persistent D5300 vibes, but in terms of specs the D5500 is definitely a lot better.

Anyway, the snapper will be made available next month for $900 / €755 and you’ll be able to pick up the camera in the traditional black paint job or in a spicier red.
