Nikon is continuously trying to bring fresh firmware updates for its digital SLR camera models in order to fix bugs, add new features, and improve overall operability.

Today, the Nippon camera and optics manufacturer announced the availability of three new firmware versions for its entry-level D3200 and D5200 cameras as well as for the recently released retro-styled pro-series camera, the Nikon Df.

In the case of Nikon D3200, the new firmware version, 1.03, comes with a small addition. After performing the update, your D3200 camera will be able to display error messages whenever you try to use optics that feature a retractable lens mechanism (e.g. AF-S DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G VR II). This will allow your camera to display an error message and block the shutter when the lens barrel is retracted.

For the D5200, Nikon has corrected a few bugs that would previously make the camera freeze or prevent it from working as intended. The new firmware v1.02 comes with the same addition as the D3200 build, but also fixes some issues that can happen in certain conditions.

With the new update, your Exif data will now display correctly focal lengths in 35mm format. Moreover, the issue that made the camera to not focus automatically when using AE-L / AF-L button with AF-ON function assigned to it is now fixed.

If you experienced a thin line of noise in the bottom right part of your images when shooting using the HDR function, you should know that, after you upgrade your firmware to the latest version, this won't happen anymore.

Finally, Nikon Df received its first firmware build that fixes a few issues that occur in various situations. If you're shooting using a Speedlight SB-800, the Press for Custom Setting f4 (Assign Fn button), f5 (Assign preview button), or f6 (Assign AE-L/AF-L button) was set to Preview and one of these buttons was pressed, the camera would not display a preview and the modeling light would not fire. With the new update this has been fixed.

Other fixes include: Speedlight sync speed when using Custom Setting e1 (Flash sync speed) set to 1/250s and correct ISO sensitivity display in Metadata when using ViewNX 2 or CaptureNX 2.
