The throne of selfie-centric cameras has a new contender. But unlike Sony’s perfume-shaped self-loving snapper, it actually looks like a camera in the real sense.

Ahead of Photokina, iconic photo gear maker Nikon has taken the opportunity to roll out a few products. One of them is the highly anticipated D750 DSLR, but that’s not all the company is unveiling today.

Nikon launches a new compact COOLPIX camera

The Nikon COOLPIX 6900 camera is also here for your pleasure, arriving in a form of a little, compact camera that has been optimized for self-portraiture.

Let’s take a look at what the camera brings in terms of specs. The COOLPIX S6900 boasts a 3-inch 460k-dot LCD screen and can be considered the successor of the COOLPIX S6600 device.

It was the first device in the COOLPIX S series to come with a vari-angle LCD monitor, and a year ago it was marketed as a camera capable of snapping “difficult shots.”

Well, difficult shots have turned into selfies, and now Nikon is rolling out the successor saying it will be a great companion for those who like to take a look at their face once or twice.

The COOLPIX S6900 has some selfie-friendly feats

In order to be that excellent selfie companion, the new COOLPIX S6900 comes with a shutter release button and a Gesture Control operation that lets users trigger the shutter without basically touching any button. It can also automatically switch the camera to a wide-angle shot for a self-portrait.

The display can be turned around to face you, so you can see exactly the angle in which you are shooting. But taking all this selfie-friendly characteristics away, the camera is quite decent on its own.

It comes with a pixel count of 16MP backed up by a Backside Illuminate (BSI) CMOS sensor and takes advantage of NIKKOR lens covering a range of 25mm to 300mm.

Additionally, users will get a 24x Dynamic Fine Zoom that enable a short close up to 2cm for macro photography. Users will also be able to shoot full HD video at 60i with stereo sound.

Like any social camera, the device comes equipped with NFC, Wi-Fi.

Last but not least, the camera arrives with a palette of software extras that will help you take your selfies to the next level.

For example, you’ll be able to use Glamour Mode which basically enhances human features, and there are lots more to take advantage of like Skin Softening and Powder or Self-Collage.

At this moment, we don’t have any info regarding pricing and availability, but expect this info to be made available as Photokina 2014 starts next week.
