Together with the new Nikon D4 full-frame DSLR, the Japanese company has also announced today a new FX-format Nikkor lens with medium thelephoto abilities, the AF-S 85mm f/1.8G, that will become available in March of this year

The construction of the 85mm f/1.8 consists of nine optical elements, with a seven-blade diaphragm which should contribute to a more circular bokeh.

Additionally, instances of lens flare and chromatic aberration are suppressed using Nikon’s Super Integrated Coatings, which should also make the pictures captured more vivid according to its maker.

Other features include a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) motor, f/16 minimum aperture, an Internal Focus (IF) design which prevents the front element from rotating, and the M/A (manual-priority autofocus) and M (manual) focus mode switch that comes standard with almost all Nikon primes.

The lens is also compatible with DX format cameras, when installed on such a DSLR providing an equivalent focal length of 127mm.

According to Nikon’s measurements the lens weights 350g (12.4 oz), protrudes 73mm (2.9 inches) from the camera’s base and takes 67mm filters.

“Whether a professional photographer who needs extreme sharpness or a photo enthusiast looking for an affordable, lightweight lens with amazing clarity, Nikon photographers appreciate and rely on the vast selection and dependability of NIKKOR lenses for their imaging needs,” said Lisa Osorio, general manager of marketing at Nikon Inc.

“The new 85mm f/1.8 is fully optimized for capturing amazing photos and videos, while providing the ability to utilize background blur to compliment the subject of their photo,” concluded the company’s rep.

The lightweight AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G prime lens will be available in March 2012, and its recommended pricing was set at $499.95 (roughly 391 EUR).

Those of you wanting to get the lens as soon as possible can pre-order one on Amazon, which has them listed at Nikon’s MSRP.
