Two popular iOS applications have gone free for a limited time. While Nike provides a reason for discounting their GPS app, the same thing cannot be said about the developers of Super 8, whose photography application shoots vintage video like using an old 8mm camera.

Nike says their NIKE+ initiative is turning five, and “To celebrate five years of providing amazing motivation to runners around the world, the Nike+ GPS App is free for a limited time.”

Nike+ GPS targets joggers mostly, but the app is equally useful in the gym. The app is used to track every indoor and outdoor workout easily, without a sensor.

The Nike+ GPS app is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPod touch (2nd, 3rd, and 4th generations). It also needs iOS 4.0 or later to ‘run.’

Features like Share Run and Cheer Me On will require an Internet connection. iPod touch does not support GPS functionality; therefore, the app’s functions are limited on the Apple players.

Nike asks users to note that continued use of GPS running in the background will decrease battery life.

Nike+ GPS, updated to version 3.0.1 earlier this year, features a new addition called Nike+ Tag - “ Just like when you played as a kid, your goal is to escape being tagged IT by outrunning your friends,” Nike explains.

Super 8, by Paramount Digital Entertainment, is also free - likely because it was recently introduced to the App Store.

And, because there are other apps out there that also deal with vintage video (only with far less features), the developers likely want folks to give it a try to see whether they like this one better.

According to their description, “Super 8 is the ultimate Super 8 camera emulator for your video-capable iDevice.”

Users can shoot vintage movies and add lens, filter and shake effects, arrange clips, even add credits to the end.

It appears that the app is chock full of effects and editing functions. We encourage photography fans to give it a go sooner rather than later. The developers didn’t say when the offer ends.

Super 8 is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch (4th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi, and iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G and requires iOS 4.2 or later.
