Indian doctors in a New Delhi hospital have successfully separated conjoined twins during a grueling operating session.

Hussaina and Hassana Badaru were separated by a team of 40 experts. The girls are one year old and they were born in Nigeria.

They were joined at the hip, which posed a high amount of risk since they shared vital body parts. They suffered from spinal cord fusion and shared a section of their gastrointestinal passage and their reproductive system.

The operation took 18 hours and it is only the fourth in the world performed on twins joined at the hip line. It cost £64,000 ($100,200 / €75,900), an amount supplied by a Nigerian donor.

The division was performed first and a reconstructive surgery session followed, the Mirror details. Doctors practiced on medical dolls before embarking on the operation.
