Android still leading, but a new iPhone may change all that

Metrics company Nielsen has announced the results of its latest survey according to which people are flocking for Android devices. But the firm cautions investors that Apple’s iOS will soon pick up with the release of the iPhone 5.

Nielsen says 43 percent of all smartphone owners today have an Android device.

In fact, “if you ask only those who got a new smartphone in the past three months what kind of phone they chose, more than half (56%) will tell you they picked an Android device,” the company noted.

So what’s happening with Apple’s all-powerful, all-attractive and luscious iOS platform?

Well, according to Nielsen, it’s keeping a steady no. 2 position in the smartphone market. But things are about to change, according to their report.

“Apple iOS remains popular in second place with 28 percent of all smartphone users, and the same percentage among those who recently got a new device,” the company’s Don Kellogg, Director of Telecom Research & Insights, reveals.

“But those figures could change quickly in the months to come. Every time Apple launches a new iPhone or makes it available on a new wireless carrier, there is an increase in their sales,” writes Kellogg.

In other words, expect the iPhone 5 to boost the market-share of Apple's iOS big time.

But Nielsen cautions investors again, saying that “Changes in share aside, the smartphone pie is getting bigger.”

“The holiday season and the launch of new devices like the next iPhone could further accelerate smartphone adoption,” the firm adds.

To be noted how Nielsen analysts bluntly say they expect a new iPhone to drop any day now, without citing any inside sources.

As you may have heard, Apple is expected to host an iPhone 5 event early next month at its Cupertino campus. Facebook is said to be dropping by for an iPad announcement and a certain 'Project Spartan’ unveiling. More in the related links below.
