The tracking firm Nielsen, which is mostly associated with offering ratings for television programs, has offered new information showing that the Xbox 360 home console from Microsoft is the most played in term of minutes in the United States for the month of June and that the MMO World of Warcraft is the most played game on the PC.

Interestingly, Warcraft III, the rather old strategy game from Blizzard, is the second most played game on the PC, when it comes to time spent with it, while third place went to League of Legends, the free-to-play game that is based on the Defense of the Ancients mod.

Fourth place has gone to The Lord of the Rings Online, another MMO that is free for most of its players, while fifth place is complemented by the PC version Halo: Combat Evolved, which has been played for an average of 2.7 minutes during June.

When it comes to home consoles, the GamePlay Metrics from Nielsen are saying that gamers spent the most time with the Xbox 360 from Microsoft, which captured the attention of players for an average of 26.5 minutes.

The Nintendo Wii is pretty far behind, with an average time of 21.8 minutes while the PlayStation 3 is a close third, clocking in at 20.5 minutes for a day.

Nielsen says that there are still people spending 6.5 minutes every day playing on the PS2, while the original Xbox managed a share of 1.9 minutes while the GameCube managed just an average of half a minute a day.

Nielsen also asked players what they are planning to buy and play in the near future and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, from Infinity Ward and Activision Blizzard, is the clear winner, followed by Gears of War 3 from Epic Games and by Madden NFL 12 from EA Sports.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is in fourth spot while Diablo III, which does not yet have a launch date, is in fifth.
