Nielsen, the tracking firm well known for offering information on consumer products and how they are used, has released a new Cross-Platform report which shows that the overall time spent with game consoles by the public has increased by 14 percent during the last year.

The firm also says that game console penetration among those who have television in their homes has grown by about 4% when compared to the second quarter of 2010.

Nielsen also says that the time spent watching television has also grown during the same time period, with the average going up by 2 hours and 43 minutes for each week.

Traditionally gaming has been seen as taking time out of TV watching but recently both Sony and Microsoft have tried to remake their gaming consoles as multimedia devices which can also deliver movies and TV shows to the whole family.

48 percent of Americans now watch video online and broadband internet has gone past 72% percent penetration in United States homes.
