Today's the day that Nicole Richie's trial begins. However, that may not happen, if Shawn Chapman Holley (Nicole's legal representative) has his way with the judge. He is requesting that the trial's start date be postponed for August 13.
Since Nicole Richie faces a misdemeanor charge, she does not have to attend the court hearings. Therefore, one could presume that Nicole is trying to postpone the trial for as long as she can, because she can go on with her life just fine. Come to think about it, that's actually a pretty good reason. But that's not the reason why she wants the trial postponed. Everything has to do with her defense strategy.
Let's take a quick recap. Nicole is being charged with DUI after she was busted driving on the wrong side of the road in Burbank, California. Before she decided to take her SUV for a spin, she smoked some pot and took Vicodin. That's what she said to the police officers that pulled her over. She denied everything later and now she's back with more. It seems that she must have followed Britney Spears' example, because she's now claiming that the test results from that day are no good. She also stated that she has proof to back her claims.
Nicole's defense depends entirely on one man, namely Dr. Terence Sean McGee. This individual is the drug expert retained to testify for "The Simple Life" star and theoretically, he has the necessary evidence to clear Nicole's name. However, the good doctor is unavailable until August 5 because he is currently out of the country, and there is no other expert that will testify on behalf of the defense.
Anyway, because of this motion, the trial will be postponed with at least one day, regardless of the outcome of today's hearing. Nicole doesn't seem to be paying much attention, as she is currently in Calgary, Canada, where boyfriend Joel Madden performed with Good Charlotte last night.
All this fuss over 5 days in the big house. Talk about living a cozy and simple life.
