09/09/09 was considered by some (who were obviously wrong) a fatidic day that would bring about the end of the world. Others, more optimistic, said it was the luckiest day of the year, since the number nine signified completion, therefore, by repetition, ultimate happiness. For socialite Nicole Richie and partner Joel Madden it was, indeed, a charmed day, as the couple welcomed the arrival of their second child, a healthy boy they named Sparrow, as MTV’s Hollywood Crush can confirm.

As it has been customary with some celebrities as of late, the announcement of the birth was made via Twitter, with Madden taking to his page to tell the world – and his many fans and followers – of his little bundle of joy. “1st day of his life & my son is already a trending topic on twitter. That’s right son, ur just like your old man. wait, I’ve never been a #TT.” Joel writes on his page. Brother Benji Madden is equally happy, writing, “Very Happy Day for The Richie-Madden Family.”

Shortly after the healthy, 7lbs 14 oz boy was delivered at a Los Angeles hospital, word of his parents’ choice for a name, Sparrow James Midnight Madden, had already spread in the written and online media. A statement from the couple, though, did not explain why the two stars had chosen Sparrow specifically for their son’s name, but it did say both mother and child were doing well. “In the middle of night, the very early hours of September 9, 2009, Sparrow James Midnight Madden was born to Nicole Richie and Joel Madden. Nicole, Joel, Harlow and Sparrow are all doing well. Thank you for all of your good wishes.”

Nevertheless, several US media outlets point out that, when it comes to somewhat weird and out-of-the-ordinary names, the Madden-Richie family already has quite a tradition. The couple’s first child, a 20-month girl, was christened Harlow Winter Kate Madden, which is, again, a name one doesn’t come across that often. Seeing how her mom and dad call her Harlow, the conclusion would be that the latest addition to the family will probably be known from now on as simply Sparrow.
