Yesterday Nicki Minaj released her latest video for the single which included a racial slur right in the title, “Lookin [expletive] [N-word].” Later in the day, she also unveiled the cover art and it managed to spark more controversy than the video, which shows her shooting two AK 47s akimbo.

The grainy artwork shows the famous Malcom X with a gun in his hand, peering from behind a curtain outside, looking concerned. The title with the N-word is printed in large letters right next to the historical figure.

Social media erupted immediately at this misuse of the legacy of the black personality and there were even two petitions posted online which blast the singer for such a blatant offense.

Minaj has since removed the photo from her Instagram and apologized with the message, “Well, I apologize. That was never the official artwork nor is this an official single. This is a conversation. Not a single.”

She continues, “I am in the video shooting at Lookin [expletive] [N-word] and there happened to be an iconic photo of Malcolm X ready to do the same thing for what he believed in!!!! It is in no way to undermine his efforts and legacy.”

“I apologize to the Malcolm X estate if the meaning of the photo was misconstrued. The [N-word] causes so much debate in our community while the [N-word] behavior gets praised and worship. Let's not. Apologies again to his family. I have nothing but respect an adoration for u. The photo was removed hours ago. Thank you.”

This particular song happens to contain an anti-male stance, as the author claims she wanted to send an empowering message to women who are so often disconsidered in the industry. This makes the use of Malcom's photo even more puzzling.

The record label has yet to release an official statement on the issue.
