I’m not much for Disney stars, in the sense that I have seen enough of them post-Disney and am relatively convinced that they can’t branch out or do better than what they did on the project that launched them. Nick Jonas could be the one example to get me seeing things otherwise.

DirecTV has released the first trailer for their upcoming series, the MMA-themed “Kingdom,” which was initially called “Navy St.”

In it, the former Jonas Brothers singer looks as un-Disney as you’d imagine, with a completely shaved head, bulging muscles, and the attitude of a real fighter. His acting seems pretty decent too, judging by the few lines he gets to say in the trailer.

Speaking of which, I can’t embed it here because *it contains graphic language that might offend, but it is available in full on YouTube.

“Kingdom” is actually a family drama. Frank Grillo stars as a former mixed martial arts star who is running a gym in Venice, California. Kiele Sanchez is the current girlfriend, but he also has an ex-partner with whom he has two boys, from what I understand.

There’s plenty of fight scenes, lots of drug taking and swearing, tense moments between family members, and even a few plates get smashed in a diner. In other words, “Kingdom” promises to be deep, tense, and captivating.

I for one am determined to give it a proper chance, if only for Frank Grillo. What about you? The new series premieres on October 8.
