The Mariah Carey vs. Eminem beef has been raging for months and, by the looks of things, it is nowhere even close to ending now. The “Butterfly” diva performed on America’s Got Talent that husband Nick Cannon hosts, and Cannon did not miss out on the opportunity of taking a stand in the bitter dispute, as People magazine can confirm.
While Cannon did not openly attack Eminem, especially after the extremely aggressive diss “The Warning” that the rapper put out there at the end of last month, he did use Mariah’s appearance on the popular show to clarify a few things about her latest single “Obsessed.” The most important of them is, of course, that the song and video have not been made to attack Eminem in any way, contrary to what Em himself might believe and to the many reports in the media.
“I don’t care what nobody say, that song is about me because I am obsessed with this beautiful girl right here. This beautiful woman next to me has more No. 1 hit singles than any single artist in the world. How do you do it?” Nick Cannon screams at the end of Mariah’s performance, seemingly unable to control his enthusiasm about his wife. When Carey tells him that there’s “another band” that has more hits than her, referring to the Beatles, Cannon agrees with her that, in this particular case, she simply can’t put up a fight.
“We ain’t worried about them, because it's all about Mariah right now.... She’s modest, she’s beautiful. Ladies and gentlemen, my soul mate, Mariah Carey.” Cannon concludes by saying, right before he and his wife leave the stage to the wild applause of the audience. As of now, Eminem has not yet responded in any way to Cannon’s subtle stabs, just like he hasn’t to the ones made this past weekend, when the younger performer tried to show he would be the better man in the dispute by refusing – with dignity and not out of cowardice – to reply to Em’s bad words for Mariah.
As for Mariah’s performance in itself, safe to say that it’s not getting the reviews the singer would probably want. Gossip blogger Perez Hilton, for one, likens it to Britney Spears’ disastrous VMA gig from 2007, “dull, disappointing and downright awful.” Fans too seem displeased with it, saying Mariah Carey is the type of artist that can do so much better than this and that, as a rule, does not compromise.
